Lactoferrin Point-of-Care Diagnostic Assay
This rapid Point-of-Care (8 minute) lateral flow diagnostic assay, together with a reader, tests for exact levels of Lactoferrin through the collection of 0.5 microliter in tears. Lactoferrin is a protein contained in tears, which protects the ocular surface with its anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-viral properties.
Lactoferrin – What is it?
Lactoferrin is a protein that exhibits a unique combination of anti-microbial, anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. It is one of the eye’s important immunological defense mechanisms and also is a biomarker used to assess the secretory function of the lacrimal gland.
Benefits of Testing Lactoferrin Levels in the Tear Film:
Low Lactoferrin levels directly correlate to DED caused by aqueous deficiency
The severity of aqueous deficient DED can be determined by the Lactoferrin level
Low Lactoferrin levels may indicate aqueous deficient DED and depressed ocular immunity, which may represent an increased surgical risk
Low Lactoferrin levels may be the cause of contact lens intolerance
Changes in Lactoferrin levels may show the efficacy of the prescribed treatment
How It Works:
Step 1
Collect sample with micro pipette
Step 2
Mix tear sample in with provided diluent vial
Step 3
Place the cassette into reader tray, then transfer entire sample into top port
Step 4
Within 8 minutes, the results will be ready to read and record to patient's chart
Results Interpretation
